For centuries, we have utilised wind to power our boats, mill our grain and pump our water. Wind power is the first renewable energy to be harnessed by mankind.
Windmills have been a part of rural living in Australia for well over a century, and is a great renewable energy source, along with being an Australian icon. For well over a hundred years, rural Australians in towns like Miles have relied on windmills as a renewable energy source, and the humble windmill has become an Australian icon.
Still one of the best and most environmentally friendly water harvesting solutions, a windmill can be erected and effective anywhere there is access to water, whether that be underground in a well or bore, or drawing from a river or dam.
Australia is a notoriously arid and tough country, and water has always been difficult to come by for rural Australians – so much so that 85% of Australia’s population lives within 50km of the coast.
The arrival of the modern windmill, thanks to George Washington Griffiths, was a game changer for pastoralists and graziers, allowing them to move further inland for stock grazing, where land was more affordable and accessible.
While most rural properties use their windmills to draw water from bores or wells, windmills can also pump water from rivers and creeks, or into and out of dams.
As modern technology consistently advances, there have been a range of challengers to the modest Windmill pump, the most recent of which being solar pumps.
Windmills are proven to have a lasting success that remains to be seen with the more modern solar pumps, with plenty of properties across Australia boasting wind pumps that are more than fifty years old and still operating perfectly.
Windmill accidents account for less than 1% of all accidents on rural properties, so while solar pumps are often regarded as a safer option, they contain a dangerous current, and also pose risk of injury or death.

With the first windmill decorated with the Southern Cross name rolling off the Toowoomba Foundry line all the way back in 1903, Southern Cross has unrivalled experience in dealing with Townname’s water harvesting needs.
The first windmills built by the Griffiths family in the Toowoomba Foundry were improved versions of blueprints designed by an American Engineer, Daniel Halladay, and these were produced well over a century ago, in 1876.
Many inland communities began to spring up and prosper thanks to these first windmills allowing rural Australians to move to drier and previously uninhabitable areas, grazing sheep and cattle, and even inland crops and farmsteads.
Unlike another Aussie classic, the lamington, Southern Cross Windmills origins in Toowoomba are not up for debate, however, both have certainly gone on to become recognisable Australian icons.
Operating out of Queensland to this day – in our Withcott factory – Southern Cross is an Australian owned and operated brand, servicing Australians from all across the country, from irrigators and graziers to rural families and households.
This stunning 9 meter R Pattern windmill sits out the front of Pumps n Solar in Roma on a 15 meter tower, and catches the eye of many a passer by. It is the largest commercially operational windmill manufactured by Southern Cross Windmills.
Originally constructed in 1950 at the Toowoomba Foundry on a property called Dalmally, roughly 30km south of Roma, it was given a new lease of life when it was moved to its current location.
Despite being eligible for the aged pension and well past retirement age, this windmill still spins freely in the wind, making it an iconic installation and piece of history in the town.
Miles was formerly known as Dogwood Crossing, the town is situated on Dogwood Creek, named by German explorer Ludwig Leichhardt in 1844. The town was renamed Miles in honour of the Queensland Colonial Secretary, William Miles.
The Miles Historical Village Museum is laid out in the style of a main street in an early Queensland rural town. There are 34 buildings including 15 historic structures relocated from the local area.
It is regarded as one of the best historical villages in Australia, and is used as a film set and special events venue, in addition to its normal operations as a museum.
