Long before the humble windmill was associated with turbines or renewable energy, here were water pumping windmills with the Southern Cross name emblazoned on their sails. The Griffiths family were producing these pumps out of the Toowoomba Foundry from as early as the late 1800’s, with designs based on blueprints from American windmills designed by Daniel Halliday.
Southern Cross have had many models of windmill for sale over the decades since the first models rolled off the foundry line, and the current windmills for sale by Southern Cross are the culmination of decades of engineering and design.

Our ‘FA’ Series towers come between 20′ and 60′, and the ‘IZ’ windwheels are available in sizes starting at 6′ all the way up to a 14′ wheel. The dimensions of your windmill pump, tower and wheel will be determined by your surrounding landscape.

All parts for the “IZ” Windmills and “FA” Towers are available for order, however for older mills it is best to call to confirm availability if you are looking to order.
New windwheels are also available to be fitted to an old windmill tower if your previous wheel is beyond repair, or even if you are looking to dismantle the pumping mechanisms and just have a garden windmill for aesthetic purposes.

The very first windmill with the words “Southern Cross” proudly printed on the tail came off the Toowoomba Factory Line in 1903, and since then, more than 250,000 windmills have been produced for thousands of customers across Australia and around the globe.
The sheer number of these windmills produced, paired with highly talented engineering and design teams along the way, meant that constant improvements were able to be made to the functionality and design of these windmills, resulting in the IZ models available today.
Unlike another Aussie classic – the lamington – Southern Cross Windmills origins in Toowoomba are not up for debate, however, both have certainly gone on to become recognisable Australian icons.

The above windmill – pictured at its new residence at the Gilgandra Museum and Historical Society – was originally installed on a farm in Mendooran in 1924.
The windmill is now used purely for display purposes – donated by the Payne family – however it pumped without fail for 73 years, and even with no pump attached, continues to spin freely to the wind, delighting children, parents and fans of history alike.
Closing in on its 100th birthday, at the most recent service, all this 7.3m windwheel required was some oil in order to keep it in working condition. This Mendooran windmill is a testament to the longevity and reliability of a Southern Cross Windmill.
